I have a Time Capsule setup as my router, and I enabled port forwarding for port 24001, mapping it to my computer's LAN IP, 10.0.1.10 (DHCP reservation). So, I saved the settings in my Time Capsule, then attempted to connect like so: I actually prefer the Airport Utility software in that it gives me a birds-eye view of my home network. With the addition of this Time Capsule, I have a new gen Airport Extreme (ac) that I placed in the hallway configured as a roaming network and an old gen Extreme in the office set up only to connect to an ancient printer that (with some tinkering) still serves well for wireless printing.
